Excerpt:

“Emma, wake up.” I blinked several times, trying to focus in the darkness, only to find Kade’s distraught eyes hovering close by. “Another nightmare?” he asked.
I nodded, wiping the beads of sweat from my brow and then cuddled close to him, resting my head on his chest. The beating of his heart had a way of calming my anxiety, soothing my every fear.
“Maybe you should talk to Alaine,” he whispered, pressing his lips to the top of my head.
“I’ll talk to her in the morning,” I exhaled.
“You’re shaking.” His hands rubbed down my arms. “Was it about me?”
I could sense a hint of concern in his voice.
“No,” I breathed. “It was about Alaine this time.”
I tried to erase the visions of her scorched and blistered body from my mind, but it was still there. In full color. Terrorizing me. The smell of smoke was still lingering in my nose, and the heat of the flames still felt warm on my skin.
I didn’t want to worry anyone with my troubles, but it was the third time this week I’d woken Kade with these horrifying nightmares. Every night it was a different loved one, and they were getting stronger as they progressed.
What was most unnerving was the shadowy figure with onyx wings present in every one. I could never make out the face but could sense its twisted pleasure as it watched me suffer.
I’d had enough of watching my loved ones endure horrible and painful deaths. Although they were nightmares, the pain was real and lingered for days after. It was something I couldn’t just erase. These dreams ate at my soul, keeping me tight in its cold, indifferent arms, holding on through my waking hours.
I prayed they weren’t premonitions, and I prayed Kade wouldn’t be in any future nightmares. I’d watched him suffer in real life, and it’d shattered my entire being. Now that we were bonded, watching it happen again would kill me.
I glanced over at the clock. It was four in the morning, but I didn’t want to go back to sleep.
“Where are you going?” Kade asked as I slipped from the warmth of his arms.
“To make some coffee and read the book Lia sent me.”
“You sure you don’t want to stay here with me?”
“You know I do, I just don’t want to go back to sleep.”
His hazel eyes swirled with desire. “I didn’t say we had to sleep.”
“Are you seducing me, Mr. Anders?”
A grin played on his lips as he pulled the covers down. “Maybe.”
“Well then,” I exhaled, jumping in next to him. “Coffee can wait.”

Review: Everything, Everything

Everything, EverythingTitle: Everything, Everything
Author: Nicola Yoon
Pages: 320
Published by: Corgi Childrens
Release Date: 3rd September 2015
Synopsis:
My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Review:

Everything, Everything was a spectacular book. It was funny, poignant, sad at times, and adorably romantic. And completely absorbing – I flew through it in a day!

Madeline Whittier knows she’s sick, that she can’t leave the house and  never will be able to. And life outside of her protective bubble was never something she thought about much, until she gets a taste of the outside world. Madeline develops quite a lot as a character throughout the book. We see her grow and develop to become more independent and stronger as a whole. She was such a fun character, too; witty, funny and relatable – especially when she was talking about her love of books!

Olly moves in next door, and Madeline is instantly interested. Olly was equally a great character. He was funny (and adorable and gorgeous 😉 ) and full of energy and life. Their relationship grows gradually – through IMs and Emails – and they go from friends to something more. I loved how their relationship developed, perfectly paced, and they were the most adorable couple!

I loved how visual this book was. Nicola Yoon’s writing style is so fun and upbeat – it flowed perfectly. I would sit down to read for 10 minutes, and would resurface to find myself having read 100+ pages an hour or so later. I was completely hooked. I think another reason why I loved this book so much was the illustrations on some pages – little drawings and graphs of things that were just spoken about in the book so that we can not only imagine them in our heads, but actually see how they were intended. And the emails – we saw those too, and it was these touches that made this amazing book  even greater. I hadn’t ever read a book quite like this before!

Rating:

Everything, Everything was one of my favourite books of 2015, and I can’t recommend it enough! 🙂 ★★★★★

Review:

This Raging Light was a spectacular book. It was real, romantic, heartbreaking yet heartwarming at the same time, with characters that capture your heart, and a gorgeously written story that is unique and moving and beautiful.

Lucille is thrown into the adult world when her mother leaves her on her own with her younger sister, Wren. She finds herself struggling to take Wren to school and going to school herself, while working tirelessly most nights to pay for bills and food. All the while, there is the fear that someone might find out that they are living on their own, that they could be separated. Lucille tries her very best to take care of her sister, and to keep them together and her best friend, Eden agrees to help.

I loved Eden’s character at the beginning of the book – she was intelligent and supportive and I loved how she had a quote for everything. I honestly thought she might become one of my favourite characters, but sometime in the middle of the book, I just felt sort of…let down by her.  I had a few problems, but, despite the times that I thought I would fall out with her character, I still like her overall.

And then there is Digby, Eden’s brother, who offers support and help to Lucille – And Lucille falls in love with him. I wasn’t entirely sure about this relationship to begin with – I could see quite a few problems-, but despite my concerns, I soon changed my mind. They were so sweet together and there were so many adorable moments between them!

The writing style was magnificent; Estelle Laure told the story beautifully. And Lucille is such a strong and admirable character who pushed past her fears to stand up to look after and provide for her sister; she puts Wren first. I loved how the book focused largely on the relationship between Lucille and Wren, how they were so close and took care of each other.

Rating: This Raging Light was wonderfully moving, and will stay with me for a long time. This is definitely one to look out for! 🙂 ★★★★☆
