My Favourite Tropes

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by  The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  Each week they suggest a new theme with a list for bloggers to choose from. This week is all about our favourite tropes! There are probably so many more tropes I’m obsessed with than the ones I’ve included but here are my top picks!

Enemies to Lovers

Enemies to lovers is the ultimate trope! If I hear a book has this trope, I’m already sold. The angst! The slow burn! I love it.

(Frostblood, Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles), The Cruel Prince)

That rumoured missing royal/ person with magical powers? Surprise, it was you all along!

I won’t lie, the main reason why I love this trope is because of Tangled. I love that movie.  It’s just so fun when you know the person they’re looking for is undoubtedly already part of the group. But I also really love the general ‘chosen one’ theme — when done right!

Recommendations with similar themes:

(The Lunar Chronicles, The Grisha Trilogy, Aurora Rising)

Unlikely groups that shouldn’t work but end up becoming like family

I love when a group of characters that shouldn’t work together are pushed together by circumstance and find not only a great friendship but a family.

(Six of Crows, Illuminae Files, Wires and Nerve (The Lunar Chronicles), Rebel of the Sands)

The grumpy character that has a soft spot for the walking ray of sunshine

There is nothing more heartwarming than a character who is perpetually grumpy/ serious just can’t keep the facade up around the warm sunny character.

(The City of Brass, King of Scars,  Obsidian, Uprooted)

I don’t know if this really counts as a ‘trope’ but I absolutely adore retellings. Bonus points if it’s an origin story!

(Heartless, The Wrath and the Dawn, The Deathless Girls)

What are your favourite tropes? Do you agree with any of these? Let me know in the comments!

  1. OH, YES. I freaking love your picks for this topic. These tropes are totally great. I love them all but I have to single out “The grumpy character that has a soft spot for the walking ray of sunshine” BECAUSE YES. That is my weak spot. My brand. My heart. Give me the type of grumpy and cold that melts for someone who is all bright and warm and fuzzy cute.
