Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week they suggest a new theme for bloggers to write about. This week’s topic was ‘non-bookish hobbies’ and my brain short circuited at that, so I’m going to just talk about 10 things that I love. Some are hobbies, some are films, drinks, and I also really wanted to blab about my pets, too, so I gave them an honorary mention on this list, too.
I’ve always loved writing, and I guess this is kind of related to books, but I’ve just started a new job which involves a lot of content writing completely unrelated to books, so I decided to include it anyway. This is a hobby that I haven’t really done for enjoyment in a while (I mean, besides for my blog), and I really want to get over my insecurities and get back into it!
I love the writing aspects of blogging, but more than that, it’s the chance to share my love of books and reading with people who also love them. Ironically, I’m the WORST at communication, but I really love the sense of community that blogging brings — the people are genuinely so lovely and I love that we’re all just rooting for each other. (Let’s also pretend that this hobby has nothing to do with books for the purpose of this post)
I used to do a lot of cooking — I remember there was a time when I wanted to be a chef! It’s not something I enjoy as much now, since having OCD kind of takes the joy out of it, but maybe one day I’ll be able to enjoy it as much as I used to.
This is a fairly new hobby, one that I picked up during lockdown. I find it so calming. Fun fact, embroidery is forever linked to Gilmore Girls in my mind now because I started getting into it while I was binge-watching the series on Netflix.
I won’t lie, my recently renewed love of coffee is probably heavily influenced by the fact that I watched the entirety of Gilmore Girls during lockdown. Apparently I am very impressionable when it comes to the actions of fictional characters because since then I can’t get enough of the stuff.
I am obsessed with Tangled, to the point where I named my cat after one of the characters from the series. Anything Tangled immediately warms my heart and boosts my mood. (If you haven’t watched Tangled the Series yet, please please do and then come squeal about it with me because there is only so much my family can take. Thank you).
The main thing I’m doing when I’m not reading is watching Netflix. I probably watch it way too much. I’ve just finished watching Schitt’s Creek and The Haunting of Bly Manor, both of which I loved.
8. Trying to keep my houseplants alive
I love plants. They bring me so much joy. However, I’m not always the best at, um, keeping them alive. I try, and I think I’m getting better at it, but I am addicted to buying them regardless.
Talking of addicted to buying things, I have a little bit of an obsession with retail therapy. When I can, I’m buying books that I probably won’t read for another two years, but occasionally I branch out and buy other things.
I’ve become so much better at taking care of my skin since I developed a routine during lockdown. I probably spend way too much time watching Youtube videos on skincare, and I’ve definitely spent way too much money on the stuff, but I am addicted and there is no turning back.
Honorary No. 11 — My pets!
My pets get an honorary mention because they are my no.1 source of joy above all else and I’ll take any excuse to talk about them. My family have quite a few pets: five dogs, two cats, and a very sweet little ferret named Chunky, to name a few. And I am obsessed with them all. I recently became a pet owner myself when I got my kitten Cassandra over the summer. I talk about her all the time on Twitter because I am genuinely obsessed with her, and I cannot even begin to emphasise how much of a positive impact she has had on my life already. I wish I could take all of the animals with me when I eventually move out of my family home, but it brings me so much comfort to know that Cass will be going wherever I go.
